The annual deer rut in Richmond Park
October 19th, 2011
A clear night on Friday, and the chance of a light frost on Saturday morning meant only one thing. That hardy annual, the Deer Rut in Richmond Park.
It’s an early start, and there is never a guarantee that you will even find the deer before the sun comes up, never mind actually finding some rutting stags. Luck was on my side though, and as dawn broke and the early morning mist began to clear I caught a glimpse of two young Red Deer stags locking antlers silhouetted in the near distance. As I approached cautiously I managed to take a few pictures, as it only lasted a brief moment. It was a truly incredible sight, and with a backdrop of the first rays of light streaming through the trees, I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect scene.
A selection of images from the morning are below.

Beautiful stuff, mate. Really lovely set of pics. Top notch.
have just had a phone call from Les and Harry saying you’ve got a double page spread in Time Out?
Stunning pictures mate. Amazing.
Brilliant. I’d seen the eye whitness one but not the whole set. I went down there this year too and didn’t come close, I’ll call you first next time. J
Beautiful work.
